Entanglements of English in the World: In Greenland too?
The Department of Cultural & Social History at Ilisimatusarfik invites to a public lecture with Associate Professor Ushma Chauhan Jacobsen
The Department of Cultural & Social History at Ilisimatusarfik invites to a public lecture with Associate Professor Ushma Chauhan Jacobsen.
English is a dominant language in our contemporary world, and deeply entangled with global politics, global economies, and global cultures.
The status of English as a powerful international lingua franca is textured by paradoxes. In this lecture, I present the historical spread of English with views from different parts of the world; I give examples of the ambivalences of a language that is both imperialistic as well as liberating; and I ask whether some of these insights can be reflected in the use of English in Greenland in the past and today.
Ushma Chauhan Jacobsen is an Associate Professor of English at the School of Communication and Culture, Aarhus University and currently a visiting lecturer at Ilisimatusarfik.
Her lecture will be in English and take place on Wednesday 16 November, 16.30 - 18.00 at Ilimmarfik's auditorium.
There will be coffee, tea and cake.
Everyone is welcome.
